Patches and utilities for the Dynamix flight simulation

WWI Flight Sim Discussion; Red Baron 3D on a Mac Sign in to follow this. Red Baron 3D on a Mac. By VonS, January 2, 2015 in WWI Flight Sim Discussion. Sim flying is actually better than the real thing in many respects mainly the cost. Using pc and mac based flight simulators we can go through every aspect of flight school without the crippling cost in easy stages and make it fun. Flight sims are not held up by the weather either as real aircraft often are, the realism levels are awesome.

What's Here?

This page is a collection of miscellaneous patches, utilities and missions for the original version of the Dynamix flight simulation game Red Baron (not the newer releases Red Baron II or Red Baron 3D.) Red Baron simulates air combat in the First World War. Although the simulation was released over five years ago, it is still highly regarded for it's groundbreaking features including detailed flight characteristics and a mission builder utility which allowed armchair aces to recreate nearly any historical mission or create their own fictional scenarios.

My involvement with Red Baron began when I became a member of the Compuserve Flight Sim Forum. I was inspired by the other creative flight-sim hackers there (especially those who were modifying Lucasfilm's Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe) and I decided to dissect the Red Baron aircraft data files. As a result, I have created several patches that modify the program to correct errors and increase historical accuracy.

All of my patches are available here as well as the best of the others created by my fellow Red Baron hackers. To download the following files, just click on the file name.

If you don't know where to start, try Bob Church'sXBARON and my RBHEX4 package. Read the article in which Computer Gaming World reviewed both and said they gave the old Baron the feeling of a factory fresh sim!

Where to find Red Baron?

All letters and comments are appreciated, but please DON'T send e-mail asking me to send you a copy of the original Red Baron! The game is still being sold by Sierra On-Line. You can get the 16 color version from their site for FREE but unfortunately it will not work with most of the patches and upgrades here! Buy their full version with the Mission Builder upgrade, it's the best flight sim deal on the market!

Game Review

Red Baron was created by Damon Slye at Dynamix and published by Sierra Entertainment in 1990 for MS-DOS 5.0. Two years later it was ported to Amiga.

Red Baron is a flight simulator game set in World War I, on the western front. It offers three game modes: dogfight, single mission or career mode, I suggest the latest. In career mode, you can choose to fly as a pilot for the German or the British. There are 17 different aircraft from both sides to choose from, including the Fokker E.I Eindecker, the Fokker Dr.I Triplane, the Sopwith Camel, Albatros D.II and a lot more. You start as a wingman, and then you can advance through the ranks, taking command of a small group of planes of variable size and types.

Red Baron was the first successful flight sim created by Dynamix - that was acquired by Sierra during the development of this game - and it started the so-called 'Great War Planes' series. Dynamix, in fact, would continue developing great historical simulations like Aces of the Pacific and Aces Over Europe.

In 1996, Red Baron was voted 4th best PC games of all time. In 1997, it was re-released as freeware.

Best Flight Sim For Mac

On October 22, 2013, Damon Slye opened a Kickstarter campaign to create a remake of the game, that was meant to support both Oculus Rift, as well as high-end flight sim peripherals like rudder pedals and 3-axis joysticks. Unfortunately, the campaign only managed to raise $40,493, so the plan was canceled. Thank god you can still play the original one!
